Development Overview
Ainsley Gommon Architects were appointed by the main contractor, A&S Group Ltd, to undertake the Design and Specification of the fire safety improvements and remedial works to 11 No residential blocks at Davids Wharf, Barry Docks.
The 11 No. Residential blocks were constructed in approximately the year 2000 and fall short of current fire safety requirements, following the introduction of the Building Safety Act 2022.
The project brief included a full assessment of the existing buildings external wall build up and compartmentation provisions, leading to the removal/replacement and/or installation of the following elements throughout each of the residential Blocks.
- Combustible timber cladding and insulation to external walls
- Combustible timber decking to balcony areas
- Cavity barrier/cavity closing solutions
- Finishing Render
- Rainwater goods
- Masonry Movement Joints
While primarily intended to improve the fire safety of the building, following further discussion with the design team, the opportunity was taken by the client to also improve the thermal performance and aesthetic of the building where possible as part of the works.
