Development Overview

Ainsley Gommon completed the design of a new build hospice and landscaped gardens. Willowbrook Hospice provides palliative care for adults with life-limiting illnesses in the St Helens and Knowsley areas.

The design accommodates support and day care facilities in addition to ten in-patient beds, arranged as a mix of single, twin and triple rooms. Each room is designed to be light homely and peaceful. The building was funded by a charitable trust and also offers support to the carers and families. The building provides an open brightly lit welcoming interior and social spaces, which utilise traditional materials and attention to detail to create a non-institutional, homely and restful environment.

The requirements of the hospice are reflected in the architecture, where the aim was to enhance the quality of life for the individual and provide a building that offered a restful, comfortable and inclusive environment. The grounds are thoughtfully landscaped to provide a range of external spaces for walking, sitting, and creating shelter. The planning has been selected to be interesting an varied.

The finished project received a mention under the Civic Trust Awards as being;

imaginative and sympathetic… sensitive… the building sits well in its landscape”.
